Shape & Use: A solid, roughly squared semi-finished steel block. Used as the starting raw material to be hot-rolled into bars, wire rods, or smaller structural shapes.
Manufacturing Process: Continuous Casting. Molten liquid steel from a furnace is poured into a water-cooled square copper mold. As it travels down the casting machine, it solidifies into a continuous square strand, which is then cut into specific lengths.
Square billets are mostly used in the production of medium and small size steel products such as reinforcing bars, angle and channel bars, and wire rods. Rectangular billets are used in production of rails, large profiles and special bars.
